The first competitive event of Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2017 takes place this Thursday with the Transvulcania Binter Vertical Kilometer, in which 200 runners will participate. This modality, with a route of 7.6 kilometres, starts from Puerto de Tazacorte and will arrive to the forest tower of El Time (Tijarafe), a path that crosses the symbolic GR-131 and that has a cumulative elevation gain of 1.203 metres.
The first athlete will take the start at 17:00 pm in Puerto de Tazacorte to face the climb to the finish line, followed by the rest of participants, who will start separated by one minute between each other. Both in the male and female category, the athlete that completes the route in less time will take the win.
The Sports Counsellor of the La Palma Island Council, Ascensión Rodríguez, highlights that “as every year, the Binter Vertical Kilometer opens the competition events of Transvulcania, and one more time this first modality will count on the participation of remarkable trail and Vertical Kilometer athletes, like the current world champion of the distance.”
In this first event of Transvulcania 2017, Columbian Saúl Padua, who obtained the victory in the last edition with a time of 48 minutes and 43 seconds, will try to defend his title facing outstanding national and international trail stars, such as the Vertical Kilometer world champion, Norwegian Stian Angermund-Vik.
Other important athletes that are participating in this new edition of the Vertical Kilometer are double trail World champion and winner of the Transvulcania Ultra Marathon for the last three years, Luis Alberto Hernando, and Frenchman Rémi Bonnet, a 22-year old who is the only runner of his age with more than 900 points in the ITRA ranking.
Czech Ondrej Fejfar, Andorran Ferrán Teixidó and Argentinian Diego Simón will also compete for the victory, like the Spaniards Arley Luque, José Luis Hinojosa, Francisco Javier Navarro, José Manuel León, Francisco Manuel Rodríguez, Daniel García and Joan Freixa.
The female category will also produce high levels of expectation due to the participation of athletes with great victories in the trail world, like the Skyrunning Asian Circuit champion, Japanese Yuri Yoshizumi.
At the national level, stands out the presence of Spanish runners Virginia Pérez, Gabriel Sánchez and Elena Medina, who will compete with other contenders for the podium, such as American Daniella Moreno, Italian Stephanie Jimenez or Czech Zuzana Krchová and Zuzana Urbancova.
After the arrival of all the athletes to the finish line, located in the forest tower of El Time, participants will be moved again to the starting point for the final trophies ceremony, that will take place in Puerto de Tazacorte at 21:00 pm.
