The Italian athlete, reigning Skyrunning Classic World Champion, is going to be one of the favourite runners in order to win the Transvulcania.
Marco De Gasperi, the Italian athlete born in Bormio, is coming to La Palma to participate at the 10th edition of the Transvulcania, in its modality of Ultramarathon. The Italian runner, who actually would be one of the favourite athletes for winning the Trail World Champion in Penyagolosa with the Italian National Team, prefers to come to La Palma and compete for the first time in the Canarian event.
Marco is an athlete that has more than 20 years of experience, and who consequently has achieved the respect of all other Skyrunners. He is undoubtedly one of the references for every Skyrunner in the world. In order to mention just some of the achievements of Marco De Gasperi, he has won six times the World Championship (1996, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2007), and he also has won with the Italian National Team eleven times the World Championship and fourteen times the European Mountain Championship. In addition, his most recent achievement was the Skyrunning Classic World Championship in 2017, beating some of the best Skyrunners in the world.
Marco De Gasperi discovered the Transvulcania in 2012, at a meeting with other Skyruning athletes in La Palma. As he told us, he “already loved the atmosphere and the passion of the people those days”. And as he recognises, he “never thought of running the Transvulcania, as it is a very hard competition for every athlete”, but “his motivations has changed a lot in the past years” and he now feels ready to fight in such a big competition. “I do not say that it is going to be easy, but it would be very special for me to try to achieve a new goal in my career like the Transvulcania” –concludes Marco.
As mentioned by the sports councillor of La Palma, Ascención Rodríguez, “that the six-time World Champion chooses to compete in the Transvulcania, shows that the 10th edition of the event is going to be very special and, of course, very close”. She also said that “we encourage every runner that still has not fill in the inscription in the Ultramarathon to do it, because there are very few available places and the organization of the event will close the registration-time very soon”.
