It’s one of his favorite runs and he will try again to bag it. Luis Alberto Hernando, double absolute winner of Transvulcania Naviera Armas, will be back at its start line on the 7th of May. True to his will of designing a short calendar, La Palma will be the first of five grand competitions, followed by Zegama Aizkorri, the Skyrunning World Championship (Buff Epic Run), Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) and the IAU Trail World Championship (Portugal). To Luis Alberto Hernando, Transvulcania Naviera Armas has become a token. It is the race that set him on his jump to ultrarunning, since before his first participation here his focus had been on shorter distances (marathons and vertical kilometers, in addition to cross-country skiing).
In 2013 he competed in La Palma for the first time, with an epic duel with Kilian Jornet, which ended in a victory for the latter. In 2014 the tables turned and he achieved his first victory. And last year he was also the absolute winner, with a record finish of 6 hours, 52 minutes and 39 seconds. No one has score higher in the Ultramarathon of La Palma.
Last season he not only won the European Championship (Ice Trail Tarentaise, France), but also the Skyrunning World Series Ultra. The latter, to which Transvulcania belongs, was built upon a victory in Tromso Skyrace (Noruega) and an eight place at Ultra Pirineu (Spain). Besides, he became a silver medalist at the IAU Trail World Championship (held at the Annecy Maxi Race in France) and the runner-up to the legendary Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB). Coincidentally, only Xavier Thévenard could beat him at the Chamonix finish line and they have both been confirmed for Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2016.
