American runner Hayden Hawks, nicknamed by the trail experts as Golden Boy, will travel to La Palma with the only goal in mind of being one of the surprises of Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2017 the next May 13th. The young athlete wants to be part of the Ultra Marathon podium and continue to add achievements to his short but intense professional career.
The Sports Counsellor of the La Palma Island Council, Ascensión Rodríguez, celebrated the participation of Hawks “in a starting line full of big names of the discipline, including veterans and young guns that will try to take the leap in a great race like Transvulcania.” In this sense, she also highlighted that “it is a privilege for the 2.000 participants in the Ultra to share the race with the best athletes and learn from them.”
Hayden, for his part, showed his illusion towards this exciting challenge in what will be his second big European competition and pointed out that many runners have recommended him this event “due to the great attractions of the island and especially for the warmth that the La Palma crowd transmit during the whole route.” “I am up to the challenge and I will provide the spectacle that this great race deserves,” he affirmed.
Hawks started to excel in the beginning of 2016 after winning the Speedgoat 50k, where he beat top athletes of the trail world that had barely hear his name before. Some months later, he travelled to Europe to represent the United States in the Mountain Races World Championship, obtaining a praiseworthy fourth place, very close to the bronze medal.
Last December he was involved in one of the big sporting stories of the year. Hayden ran alongside Zach Miller until the finish line of The North Face Endurance Challengue San Francisco 50. Both athletes signed a legendary race, sharing the route from the start to the finish for more than 10 hours.
After this great feat, Hawks finished second in the Chuckanut 50k and won the Red Mountain Run and the Moab’s Red Hot.
Finally, it is important to remember that Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2017, which will take place in less than one month, is repeating as official race of the Migu Run Skyrunner® World Series 2017.
