Double UTMB winner Xavier Thévenard will participate in Transvulcania for the third time

French athlete and trail superstar Xavier Thévenard has confirmed his presence in Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2017 the next May 13th. This is a competition that Thévenard knows perfectly after his participation in the 2013 and 2014 editions, pulling out of the latter due to health issues and obtaining a praiseworthy 11th place in his first presence in La Palma.

Thévenard’s importance in this discipline is easy to explain considering that he is the only runner in the world that has scored a victory in all of the four big races of the tough UTMB: Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, Courmayeur Champex Chamonix, Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie and Orsières Champex Chamoix.

The Sports Counsellor of the La Palma Island Council, Ascensión Rodríguez, celebrated the addition of this great athlete “to the excellent list of sportsmen that our Ultra Trail will have in its ninth edition.” Besides, she highlighted that Transvulcania “will be one of the few international races out of France to which Thévenard returns.”

The runner has explained that this Transvulcania edition represents a rematch after his pull out in 2014. According to him, his physical shape that year was “quite good” but he suffered from a stomach virus in the previous days that deprived him of crossing the finish line. However, he declares that “it was an enriching experience because of the landscapes, the reception of the La Palma crowd and the enthusiasm that exists around this race.”

In spite of his huge achievements in mountain races, Thévenard was a biathlon and cross-country skiing specialist in the beginning. He was soon captivated by the trail running world and surprised everybody when he won the 2013 Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc. Two years later he repeated the first place in this prestigious competition.

His professional career has other major victories, such as the Endurance Trail des Templiers (100-kilometre route) or the Transju Trail in 2011 and 2013 (72-kilometre route). He also finished 8th in the 2015 Trail World Championship in Annecy (France).

It is important to remember that the ninth edition of Transvulcania will repeat as official race of the Migu Run Skyrunner® World Series 2017.
