The cantabrian runner Azara García de los Salmones, current World trail runner-up, has confirmed her presence in the Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2017. The athlete will take part for the third time in the La Palma competition, in which she obtained a brilliant win in the Half Marathon of 2015.

García de los Salmones will arrive to La Palma the next May 13th after adding a new Transvulcania victory to her professional career in the longest race that she has completed. The Cantabrian was a cyclone during the 125 kilometres of the race (with a positive elevation gain of 8.000 metres), which she finished in 16 hours and 25 minutes.

The Sports Counsellor of the La Palma Island Council, Ascensión Rodríguez, highlighted that Azara García is “one of the best mountain runners of our country and without a doubt will be one of the most important names during the big week of this ninth edition.”

For her part, the athlete declared recently that her favourite aspect of the race is “the atmosphere that we live and the affection that the people show to all the athletes.” This way, she also remarked that “it has always been a very special race to me and has brought me good luck throughout my career.” “Transvulcania is the dream of any mountain runner,” annotated the Cantabrian.

With 33 years of age, García conquered the silver medal in the last World Championship celebrated in Portugal, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations. Her opponent for the gold medal was the French runner Caroline Chaverot, whom has also confirmed her participation in the Transvulcania Naviera Armas 2017.

In the last season she managed to step onto the first place of the podium in races such as the Epic Trail Villa de Cartes, the Trail Ecoparque de Trasmiera, the 27K Kangas Mountain, the Trail Tejas Dobra, the Trail Monte Brazo, the Trail Pantano del Ebro, the Zumaia Flysch Trail Marathon (Spain’s National Club Championship) or the Spanish Snowshoe Championship.

Azara took part in Transvulcania for the first time in 2014, finishing in second place in the Half Marathon and obtaining a third position in the Vertical Kilometer. She participated again a year later in both modalities, with a victory in the Half Marathon and a second place in the Vertical Kilometer.
